BUSINESS BACKGROUND

What began as an interest in repainting old furniture and cabinetry led to an opportunity for Caryn Morales to purchase Knot Too Shabby – a retail shop nestled in quaint Beacon, NY. The store’s anchor product is CHALK PAINT – a unique brand of decorative paint imported from U.K. producer Annie Sloan. Caryn explains “the paint adheres to just about any finish. You don’t need to sand, prime or strip the material prior to applying so it is easy to use.” Morales herself had been a loyal Chalk Paint customer and taken many workshops about how to use the product at Knot Too Shabby –the only distributor in the entire Hudson Valley. “When the former owner told me she wanted to sell, I knew it was a chance to re-launch my career doing something I love” recalls Morales.

HOW WE ARE HELPING

But like many entrepreneurs before her, Caryn swiftly learned that Knot Too Shabby, less than two years old, was still considered a start-up –the banks would not even consider a loan request. “I found Community Capital at just the right time. They saw the potential and said YES so I could close the deal” said Caryn. Paint, brushes and related products currently account for 50% of sales. Workshops, custom painted furniture and other home décor items are also part of the product mix as are in-home services where Caryn will come to your house to refinish kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, furniture and more. “I’m expanding our social media presence, strengthening the website and starting to lay the foundation for e-commerce.” We applaud Caryn’s creativity with an eye toward profitability.
